Cumulative Table of Contents 1982-89
Compiled by John Leeder

Introduction

Compiling a cumulative table of contents could be expected to be a routine, boring exercise, right? But in this ease it turned out to be otherwise. Approximately half of the issues covered by this listing fell into the term when I was editor, either officially or de facto, of the Canadian Folk Music Bulletin. As a result, every item from that period evoked a rush of memories, a small warm glow at some private victory, a stab of frustration at something I fell down on. Quite a nostalgia trip! In addition, a systematic rundown of the issues, edited by my predecessor, Tim Rogers, rekindled my sense of wonder at Tim's boundless energy and resourcefulness. An assessment of the amount of material carried by the Bulletin during Tim's tenure boggles the mind - especially when you consider that, like me, he did the job as an unpaid volunteer, in his spare time. Tim, my hat is off to you once again! Lastly the very beginning of the period covered by the index included the farewell issue of Jon Bartlett and Rika Ruebsaat as editors. For many years Jon and Rika were free-enterprise publishers of Canada Folk Bulletin; when that publication merged with the Canadian Folk Music Society's newsletter to form the magazine you're reading now, they already had an admirable track record of service to Canada's folk music community, service which continued under the aegis of the Society.

I used the word "index" above. This is technically inaccurate. As the heading says, this is a "cumulative table of contents", nothing more. No analysis of the subject matter of articles is attempted. In most cases, though, the title of an article or feature says it all, and it should be pretty easy for readers to find material related to areas they're interested in.

Again, compiling a 'cumulative table of contents" turned out to be less straightforward than expected. Many questions arose during the compilation. For example, what should go in the "Articles and Features" category'? I tried to leave out straight housekeeping" matters, but sometimes the housekeeping was of major relevance and deserved to be included, such as financial statements or the constitution of the Society. Is an editorial housekeeping? Does giving an editorial a title magically confer the status of an article? I tried to exclude ongoing "columns" by the same author under the same name - mostly these are listed only under the author's name. But in some cases (for example David Spalding's column, which had two different titles, sometimes subtitles, sometimes not) I fell on the side of inclusion in the main listing. Another quandry was posed by ongoing features such as "The Singers." with columns by different writers each time, some with individual titles, some without. Thirdly, how about an overall feature such as "State of the Art," with separate reports for each province? I dealt with questions like these on the spot, but expect that, given the length of time it took to compile the listing, policies sometimes changed, were forgotten or "fuzzified," inconsistencies crept in, and my on-the-spot decisions did not add up to a coherent overall policy. I only hope that any inconsistencies which may exist are not of such a magnitude as to interfere with the usefulness of the listing.

The citation method should not give anybody any trouble. To choose a random example, "(1985) 19/4-8" means "page 8 of vol. 19, no 4, which bore a cover date of 1985."

I should explain some of the terms and abbreviations I used in the case of the songs. "(Trad.)" after a song name of course stands for "traditional," but would more accurately refer to a song which appears to be traditional, i.e., it's in traditional style and we don't know who wrote it. Where the author is known, he or she is credited, even where the song has passed into tradition. In addition, a couple of other terms are used. "(Song contributor)" refers to a person who sent us a song which he or she didn't write. "(Song source)" refers to the earliest known person from whom a song contributor got the version of the song that was printed in the Bulletin. This includes published versions. The book's author or editor is listed as the source in such cases.

In the reviews section, I decided to list books and recordings both by title and by author/artist, to make it easier for readers to find particular items. Where there are several authors/artists for one item, I used only the first name in the order given in the book or recording. Also, "(rec.)" stands for "(recording)," which includes both LPs and cassettes. It would include CDs, too, only none were reviewed in the period.

In alphabetizing, I inserted the article ("(The)," "(La)," etc.) only where necessary. Unfortunately, the necessity came up fairly often, perforce interrupting the flow of the language of the item's title. Too bad, - but there was no help for it, even though I find it unesthetic.

And, of course, let's not neglect the business end of things. At the end of the table you'll find information on the availability and cost of the issues listed. Collect 'em all, kids!
